Company

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is a special district responsible for public transit services, congestion management, specific highway improvement projects, and countywide transportation planning for Santa Clara County, California. It is one of the governing parties for the Caltrain commuter rail line that serves the county.

The Challenge

Upon the opening of the Levi Stadium in Santa Clara California the VTA found itself pressured in a way it had never been before. On top of having more demand for their transit then they could fulfill, new comers to the bay area had to rely on a series of independent apps to get around Silicon Valley without a private vehicle.

The UX Flow Solution

The Valley Transit Associations (VTA) Trip Planner, developed over a decade ago, stands as a testament to the power of integrating technology with public services. The app encompassed all public and private transit options within the San Francisco Bay Area, thereby empowering users to make informed travel decisions. This comprehensive platform enabled users to plan their journeys, access real-time schedules, and receive guided directions to their destinations.

The VTA Trip Planner served as a pioneer, combining all transit options into a single platform, simplifying travel planning and eliminating the need to handle multiple schedules and payment systems. This significantly eased the Bay Area commuters' ability to navigate the region's intricate transportation network, saving time and money while contributing to reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. This project, completed eight years ago, remains a sterling example of impactful UX and UI design that stands the test of time.

App User Flow

The user flow for the Valley Transit Associations (VTA) Trip Planner app begins with a homepage where users can enter their starting point and destination. The app then presents a variety of transit options, including real-time schedules, cost estimates, and customizable preferences such as preferred transit modes and walking distances. Once the user selects a preferred route, the app provides step-by-step directions and alerts for any service disruptions or delays. The app also offers payment options for various transit services, including the ability to purchase tickets directly from the app. The user flow is intuitive, streamlined, and designed to make the transit experience as seamless as possible for Bay Area patrons.
