Case Study / Project Overview for DocuSign:

In 2012, I had the privilege of serving as the lead UX/UI designer for DocuSign's mobile app. The hallmark of a good design is its timelessness, and I take pride in the fact that my foundational design has stood the test of time, with the app maintaining many core design elements for close to a decade. For context, DocuSign, the global leader in e-signatures, reported a revenue of $2.52 billion in 2023.

The Challenge

In 2012, DocuSign, a budding company, ventured into the mobile realm. They enlisted my expertise to overhaul the User Experience / Interface for their Android and iOS applications, a project encompassing both phones and tablets. The examples presented here were designed for devices like the iPhone 4, Galaxy S3, and iPad 2.

One of the challenges was to adapt the "in-person" signing feature from the desktop app for mobile use. This feature enabled people in the same room to sign a document without individual account logins. Shifting this feature to mobile solved a significant issue by facilitating document signing with a finger.

The Solution

Addressing the challenge of creating a mobile app that could facilitate in-room dual signatures while incorporating desktop version features was no small feat. My approach involved experimenting with various interaction models to pinpoint the most effective solution.

This exploration led to the identification of key mobile-friendly features for document signing. Among these were a zoom function for clear document visibility and a drag-and-drop feature for accurate signature placement. Furthermore, I recognized the necessity for an intuitive interface, ensuring effortless app navigation and easy access to necessary features for users.

Upon evaluating different models, I assimilated the most successful elements from each trial into an elegant and effective interaction model. This model formed the foundation for today's iOS and Android app experience. The process necessitated numerous iterations, with the design continuously tested and refined to meet user needs. The ultimate goal was to ensure a smooth and efficient document signing experience on mobile platforms.

DocuSign was aburgeoning company, embarking on a journey to reshape their initial app's user interface and experience on Android and iOS platforms. My role was to redesign the app for a range of devices, including the iPhone 4, Galaxy S3, and iPad 2. One notable challenge was integrating the "in-person" signing feature into the mobile application.

The aim was to facilitate document signing on mobile devices using a simple finger gesture. The successful integration of this feature significantly uplifted the user experience. The privilege of designing the DocuSign app and contributing to the evolution of this forward-thinking company was a truly rewarding experience.
