Colony Wars: Redux - A Modern Take on a PlayStation Classic

My Role

UX & UI Designer - Multidimensional
Skill Sets: User Research, User Experience (UX) & User Interface (UI) 3D modeler & Video Editor

Growing up in Silicon Valley, my introduction to Colony Wars was nothing short of serendipity. A casual visit to the only Blockbuster in town turned into a life-long love affair with what I believe to be the best console flight sim of all time. I recount that tale here.

Modernizing UI & UX: A Fusion of Past and Present

The challenge was not just to increase resolution but to reimagine the user experience. The original games were built for a different era, and it was vital to translate that into a contemporary gaming experience while maintaining the game's spirit.

Redefining the UX & UI for Colony Wars: Redux

Reimagining Colony Wars: Redux was no small feat, especially when the goal was to recapture memories while introducing contemporary design enhancements. For many, their last venture through the Gallonigher system might seem like a distant memory, while others might still recall the quirks of the original gameplay. For context, the classics operated on a modest 640 x 480 - pixel resolution.

Upgrading to 4K graphics might appear straightforward, but it was crucial to remember the user experience of the original—inserting a disk into the PlayStation. This understanding became foundational as we amalgamated features, levels, and briefings from the first two games, crafting a seamless and intuitive menu interface.

The navigation designs of both predecessors had unique distinctions. A notable feature of the first game was its comprehensive database, providing rich backstory and details about the Colony Wars universe. It was imperative to retain this legacy feature, prompting the debate: Do we nest it within the original menu framework or make it easily accessible from the main interface? Our answer lies in the redesigned Colony Wars: Redux Menu, a harmonized experience spanning the trilogy's essence.

Elevating the 3D Models

To set the stage for this ambitious remake, it was essential to offer a glimpse into its potential. By closely examining the original PS1 models from the discs, I sculpted a contemporary rendition of the iconic player craft, the Hex, from the sequel. This served not only as a homage to the classic but also as our gold standard for the project's visual direction.
